Shaadi Connection

Each and every generation ke saamne life ke important-important choices hote hain. Meri generation ke saamne bhi the: Feminist banoon, ya commie? Amitabh Bachchan style mein duniya ko jala doon, ya Udaan ki Kalyani Singh jaise change initiate karoon, one duffer at a time? (Udaan mere zamane ka bahut hi badiya TV serial tha jisme Kalyani Singh ki mukhya bhumika nibhai thi Kavita Choudhary ne, who was also known as Lalitaji).

But going by a new TV serial it seems that is kalyug main girls have taken many steps back and they now have just two choices: Love Marriage Ya Arranged Marriage (Sony).
There are two best friends, Shivani, who is in favour of love marriage, and Mansi, who prefers arranged marriages. They are constantly hugging each other, going on long scooty drives, telling each other how much they love each other. But Shivani and Mansi are such thakeli chicks that the only topic of discussion for them is how to get married: love ya arranged.
This Arranged vs Love toh bahut hi old, boring, dull sa topic hai. But is serial ki special baat yeh hai ki agar chiraag le ke bhi dhundane jaoge toh bhi you will not find two more annoying girls.
I’ve watched four episodes of this show aur main Gita pe haath rakh kar keh sakti hoon that this best-friends ka angle and love-arranged ki takrar toh facade hai, a new cling-film on a old bowl. Inside the bowl there’s the same baasi sabzi of pati, saas, sasural, sindoor and, of course, syappe, kalesh and many ansoo bhari raatein.
The two BFFs will land up in the same house, married to two brothers in different ways — one love marriage, the other arranged. First toh the Arranged Bahu will get lots of love, but some misunderstanding ke baad Love Bahu’s palada will be high. And so this will go on till one of them either leaves the house or starts having husband tension. Then slowly-slowly, after many annoying episodes, it’ll emerge that arranged ho ya love, aadmi Chand pe apna nyaara sa bungalow bana le ya Mars pe, gay marriages kare ya straight, shaadi ke ladoo hamesha hi human digestive system ke liye challenge rahenge. Yeh aap-pe depend karta hai ki aap kis type ki diet pasand karte hain, because us-pe hi nirbhar hai aap ki potty ki kismat.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
