Twisted tales of love

A still from Amita Ka Amit

A still from Amita Ka Amit

Ek zamana tha jab Bhai Vellu, I mean St. Valentine, ko chup-chup ke boys and girls ki shaadi karani padhti thi. But ab naya daur hai and if Bhai Vellu were to visit hamara desh now he would weep copious tears — not because of the sort of people who are getting married, but how these people are ensuring both calamity and kalesh by picking the worst spouses anyone can possibly find.

Pehle toh Anamika (Sony) mein Jeet ne us chudail ke saath saat phere le liye while Rano was left weeping and worrying. Aur ab ek new serial aaya hai, Amita ka Amit (Sony), where two people who seem to dislike each other are being brought together — not by vidhata, but by some serial twisted minds. Amita ka Amit is about this golu-molu, sweet girl, Amita, whose sweet se parents want to get her married. Amita is also excited about getting hooked via an arranged arrangement. She’s quite normal, if a little dumb.
Then there’s Amit, mummyji’s ladla son who drinks milk and watches sher-bazaar mein halchal and giravat in his free time. Though his mummyji is sweet, he’s a grumpy type of guy.
Toh hua yeh that someone tried to make the Amita-Amit match, but Amit rejected motu Amita. And since that day an army of tiny but cussed cupids have been shooting invisible prem ke teer into Amita and Amit’s asses. Not to hurt them, but to jagao pyaar ke armaan.
But these two idiots are just scratching their itching asses and going about their business, i.e. dreaming of romance with an arranged spouse. This, of course, won’t last long and soon Amita and Amit will get married. There will be no love initially, but eventually pyaar will blossom.
If you want to see true love, you have to turn to Bade Achche Lagte Hain (Sony). No, Ram aur Priya’s pyaar is not what I’m talking about, but that true prem which Priya has for Ayesha. So what if this love is one-tarfa, the fact is that elder sister Priya is so besotted with her annoying sister that she hasn’t even noticed that her sister, a) has been replaced by another chick who has twisted teeth and zero glamour quotient, and b) Ayesha, who was always very chudail-like, will always remain chudailish, no matter what.
Anyone else would have seen through Ayesha’s nonsense, but not Priya who is willing to sacrifice everything for her sister. If Bhai Vellu were around, he would have given two slaps to this sort of love. Since he is not, could Ram please oblige us?

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
