The Union home ministry is holding a high-level review meeting with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday where the agency is expected to pitch for more manpower and resources.

As the fate of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) hangs in uncertainty, the Union home ministry still has some options to emerge out of the crisis and operationalise the anti-terror body. Government sources said on Wednesday that the option of making the NCTC a “statutory’’ body is being kept open by the government.

With Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee gunning for the Centre on virtually all crucial issues, ranging from FDI to the National Counter Terrorism Centre, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) intends to strike back by seeking a report from the West Bengal government on a February 5 rape case in Kolkata that has put the state government in an embarrassing position.

Political fireworks on the controversial National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) are expected to be witnessed in the national capital as early as Tuesday when MPs of all political parties meet to discuss the proposed amendments to the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Notably, the NCTC derives its powers directly from the UAPA.
