CPWD internal panel to probe stadia construction
The CPWD has set up an internal committee, headed by the additional director general (CWG), to look into the arrangements and construction-related problems in the 10 stadia constructed, renovated or remodelled by the agency for the Commonwealth Games-2010. CWG: MCD mayor seeks internal vigilance report
MCD mayor P.R. Sawhney has directed the municipal commissioner to submit all the internal vigilance report pertaining to the Commonwealth Games projects to him. However, he maintained that the credibility of the CBI was suspicious and there should be a judicial inquiry into the allegation of corruption.
Stadium inaugurated without crucial work
The pressure to show that projects are being completed in time for the Games has begun telling on the civic agencies and others related to the Games extravaganza as they seem to be on a spree of declaring a stadia “inaugurated” even when several crucial works remain. The Sunday fiasco of inaugurating a leaking weightlifting stadium, CPWD officials maintain, may have been avoided had they been allowed three or four more days.
Deadline for VK flats is Sept. 10
The deadline for the DDA’s Vasant Kunj flats project, which was to be developed for accommodating delegates and mediapersons, besides tourists, has been pushed back from August 31 to September 10. The authorities concerned are trying to tide over severe shortage of labour.
Centre will revive plan to ‘civilise’ auto drivers
With the D-day being less than three months away, the Union tourism ministry is planning to revive the training programme for autorickshaw and taxi drivers ahead of the Commonwealth Games. The programme had run into rough weather with the drivers not turning up at the training venues.
Traders anxious about renovation work in CP
The NDMC and the traders in Connaught Place are awaiting anxiously these days for the two Games projects currently going on at Connaught Place, to get over at the earliest possible. While the CP restoration project is nearly 90 to 95 per cent over, the other project of installing four escalators in CP’s outer circle and laying of duct for wires in the middle circle is keeping the authorities on their toes.
Tour operators try to keep out of legal ambit
The drive of the Delhi government’s tourism department to register tour operators and travel agents before the Commonwealth Games to ensure hassle-free stay and travel for the tourists has again been extended till September 30. The earlier deadline was June 30, which in turn had been extended from the previous deadline of March 29. The drive was initiated on January 28.
