And resolutions to go

No exotic star holidays for me:
I just don’t have the physique or stamina of Aamir Khan or of Kiran Rao to rush off to Koh Samui in Thailand for a scuba-diving break. Neither do I have a fascination for Gstaad where Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor Khan zoom off so frequently. Switzerland and its snow-capped Alps I have seen enough of in the Yash Chopra vintage romances.

A world apart

The other day, someone asked me why I never give up making movies about the underworld. The simple answer to that is, “Why should I?” And to that I would add, that the subject is inexhaustible. Just like love stories are.

Quality be damned

To locate a common denominator at the movies would be any dream merchant’s most-cherished dream come true. Imagine a film which appeals in equal proportions to the mandarins as well as the masses!

Change your approach to make a difference

I am a 26-year-old girl and my problem is my older sister. She interferes in everybody’s lives and is also two-faced. She was married but left her in-laws’ home and is now staying with us. Her husband is abroad and they have a kid. After the delivery, the doctor advised my sister to consult a psychiatrist because of her complaints about her in-laws. We did not do this. Her intention is to take over the house.

Make life feel wanted

I look at the mirror and don’t know what to say. Give me one reason to smile at my age.
— A reader who is in his late 70s and full of apprehensions.

They say it again and again

Katrina Kaif:
Salman Khan and she have no issues. Ranbir Kapoor, yeah, she concedes is a wonderful co-star and good friend. Shudder. And she really, really wants to work with all the Khans. Who doesn’t? Accessible only on the eve of her film’s release or if her apartment is devastated by bad plumbing, leading to water flooding. It often is.

Hitting the right spot

Where to hang Kasab? It’s the place that counts. In fact, I have always believed that a location in a film should be treated like a character. In the right context and with rightly composed shots, you will almost feel as if the location is alive. It should have a recall value long after the film is over.

Move on and embrace life anew

Q. I am 25 and working for a medical transcription company. A year ago I joined a PG course where I met a girl who is also a Muslim. I have struggled a lot to get this job. I do not take girls for granted, I respect them. But soon as I proposed to this girl, she stopped accepting my calls and did not talk to me. My question is: I did not tell her I am interested in a long term relationship with her (marriage), should I proceed further and ask her opinion regarding this or should I accept her decision and respect it? We both have another semester to go and then placements. I am continuing both my course as well as my job, which is my bread and butter.

Women come edited onscreen

QWill you show Kasab’s hanging in the film you’re making on the 26/11 attacks?
Yes, because that will be a perfect happy ending for an otherwise dark violent story.

Beware the gang of producers

Producers, dear friends, are a necessary evil. Without them, there would be no movies. And indeed, why should producers be interested in any factor but profits-profits-profits?

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
