Fresh rape case troubles UP govt

Even before the dust over the Banda rape case has settled down, the Mayawati government is all set to face another embarrassing situation over a similar case.
A young woman, who is currently lodged in Etawah jail, has moved an application before the chief judicial magistrate claiming that she was raped by Vindo Awasthi, the principal of the local Gyansthali School on December 16.
The school is owned by Bahujan Samajwadi Party MLA Shiv Prasad Yadav.
The court, however, has fixed January 29 for the next hearing on the woman’s application.
The woman claimed that she was raped with the consent of her husband, Ganesh Shankar, who later committed suicide on December 18 by consuming sulphas tablets.
The police promptly arrested the woman on December 23 and sent her to jail for provoking her husband to take the drastic step of ending his life.
The woman has alleged that the principal is being shielded by the Bahujan Samajwadi Party MLA and that she has been falsely implicated in the case of her husband’s suicide.
The Bahujan Samajwadi Party MLA, however, said there is no truth in the allegations and demanded that an inquiry should be ordered to bring out the truth in the matter.
Etawah SSP Ashok Raghav also denied having received any such complaint from the alleged victim.
Meanwhile, Special DG Brij Lal told reporters on Sunday that investigations had revealed that the woman’s relationship with her brother-in-law was a bone of contention between her and her husband.
“Moreover, on the day that the woman claims she was raped, the location of the principal was in Bharthana which is 17 km away from Lakhna. His location has been traced from the location of his mobile phone,” the Special DG said.
The Special DG further denied that the police was working under any pressure from the MLA.
“We are working on basis of facts and evidences found in the case,” the Special DG said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
