Sourcing peace

Given all the faculties bestowed upon human beings including that of reason, you would think human beings are the most harmonious beings on earth. But if you look at history, the world has never really been peaceful. People have been fighting for food, for wealth; they have been fighting over boundaries and over faith and belief systems.

A scholar deity

Once Ravana performed a sadhana and received as reward a jyotirlinga from Shiva himself.

Follow Krishna’s path

The Bhagavad Gita, the Bible and the Koran — whatever these scriptures say, their essence lies in a story that goes like this: One day a man went to the beach and the early morning breeze on the beach was so fantastic that he became blissful.

A culture of seeking

In ancient times if anybody spoke anything other than what the existing organised religion of that time preached, the first thing people said was, “kill”. Whether it was Socrates, Mansoor, Jesus, those seekers of truth, who never became well-known, many men and women have been killed thus. So in those parts of the world “realised beings” were wise enough to shut up and mind their own business rather than talking and getting killed.

Receiving the guru’s grace

This is the time of the year when Shiva the Adiyogi first noticed the Saptarishis — the now-celebrated seven disciples.

Perfect devotion

Devotion means taking your emotion to its highest pitch. Devotion, in fact, is held as the highest form of emotion because it is the least entangling; it is liberating. But if you have agendas, don’t waste your time on devotion because then you can’t be a devotee.

Beautiful bonds

There are many types of relationships in your life. There are neighbours, friends, wives, husbands, children, parents, siblings and lovers, as well as people you hate — everything is a relationship. Fundamentally, all relationships in your life exist because you have certain needs, be it physical, mental, emotional, social, financial etc.

Why do you smoke?

People always come to me and say, “I want to give up smoking. What should I do?”

Mother recalled

In the body that you carry right now, what came out of your mother’s womb is hardly there. Today, whatever you carry, it is all from Mother Earth.

Ride to freedom

On a Purnima some 2,500 years ago, something special happened after which the world has never been the same. After almost eight years of struggle, Siddhartha Gautama had become very weak. His body was destroyed almost to the point of death. One day while trying to cross the river Niranjana, which was a stream with knee-height water, Gautama’s body became so weak that he could not take a single step. So he just held on to a dead branch and stood. He was not one who gives up easily.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
