Amid the ongoing tussle between the Centre and the CBI over complete functional autonomy to India’s premier investigating agency, the CBI is now all set to raise the issue before the Supreme Court about several instances of various state governments making it mandatory to take their sanctions for prosecuting even Central government’s group “B” and “C” grade employees posted at various Central departments offices in their states.

The Centre had on Friday opposed in the Supreme Court the CBI’s plea for more powers for its director and for raising the length of his tenure from two to three years.

In connection with its probe into the Sadiq Jamal encounter case, the CBI sleuths have again started scrutinising call record details of senior Gujarat police officers who have been accused in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. Sources in the agency said call records are being scrutinised to probe the conspiracy which led to both encounters.

Former Army Chief General V.K. Singh has provided fresh evidence pertaining to the bribe-offer allegedly made to him by a retired Army officer on September 22, 2010 to the CBI.

Sources said revelations made by former MHA official R.V.S. Mani, who had filed the ministry’s two affidavits pertaining to the Ishrat case in 2009, are crucial. Sensing a conspiracy behind the controversial (first) affidavit of the ministry of home affairs filed in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case in 2009, the CBI, in the course of its probe, found that a senior Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer already under the scanner of the agency had allegedly dictated the draft of the affidavit.

The CBI recently questioned Tariq Parveen, a close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, in connection with its probe into the Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter case.

The CBI is soon likely to examine Rajendra Kumar, special director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), as part of its probe into the January 2003 Sadiq Jamal encounter case. Mr Kumar has already been quizzed twice in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case being probed by the CBI.

The department of personnel and training (DoPT) on Monday notified a CBI probe into the killing of Ranvir Sena supremo Brahmeshwar Singh, alias Mukhiya. Mukhiya, founder of the militia of big landholders and middle-class peasants in south Bihar plains, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Bhojpur district on June 1, 2012.
