CID arrests 5 Maoists in Bengal
The state CID on Tuesday arrested five Maoists — Madhusudan Mandal, 44, Sachin Ghoshal, 42, Rajesh Mandal, 19, Siddhartha Mandal, 36, and Sanjay Mandal, 42 — from South 24 Parganas. While Madhusudan, alias Narayan, had spearheaded the Nandigram movement in 2007 from behind the scenes, Sachin is a senior member of the Maoist technical wing. They have been booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
PSU banks take a base rate plunge
Leading public sector banks such as the State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda took the base rate plunge on Tuesday.
The lenders have announced base rates of 7.5-8 per cent per annum. Under the new norms set by the Reserve Bank, this is the lowest rate at which banks will lend.
The new rates will replace the earlier prime lending rate (PLR), which allowed corporates to get loans at extremely low levels. Under the base rate regime, retail and small borrowers will not be subsidizing large borrowers any longer.

MCD to act tough on defaulters
The MCD is planning to take tough action on the property tax defaulters. It is also planning to simplify the property tax return form for the benefit of the payers.

Jan Ahaar scheme launched

‘Aviation infrastructure a concern’
Members of a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Culture and Tourism on Tuesday expressed serious concern over shortcomings in aviation infrastructure, recent incidents where aircraft have not followed the prescribed flight path as well as manpower shortages that could have an impact on aviation safety in the country. The concern was expressed at a meeting of the committee in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
