‘Child labour work at Games sites’

The Delhi BJP has sought a probe by child rights group on engaging children at Commonwealth Games projects sites. BJP chief Vijendra Gupta made the demand after inspecting five stadia being constructed for the Games found that child labourers are being employed in the projects.

‘Secy appointment can’t be disclosed under RTI’

Information pertaining to appointment of top bureaucrats cannot be revealed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the Delhi high court has said.
The court dismissed the RTI activist and Magsaysay Award winner Arvind Kejriwal’s plea seeking disclosure of information on the ground that people had the right to know as to what was the grade assigned to an officer who was empanelled.

Civic agencies downplay reports of irregularities

A day after reports of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) alleging poor quality and deviation from norms in various Games-related projects, the civic agencies sought to downplay the entire issue saying it was part of routine exercise between the commission and them. The CVC too put out a clarification on its website saying the reports regarding various CWG projects were initial findings and should not be construed as final report.

No bulletproof vehicles to ferry athletes

There will be no bulletproof buses to ferry athletes and delegates, travelling to and from the Commonwealth Games venues and the Games Village or other accommodations, the Delhi police has said. However, adequate security arrangements would be put in place to ensure top class security. The bulletproof security was demanded by Pakistani security delegation in the wake of the Lahore bus attack in March 2009.

No need to panic, CWG work on track: CM

Amid pressure from various quarters on the Commonwealth Games projects, chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said that these will the best ever Games. She, however, denied any knowledge of the CVC report, which has indicted various agencies for compromising on quality and not following the norms while completing the projects. But Ms Dikshit added that action would be taken against errant officials when the report would be formally submitted.
