BJP likely to nominate Hema, Naqvi to RS

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to nominate actor-turned-politician and the party’s star campaigner, Ms Hema Malini, to the Rajya Sabha.
The party, which is likely to finalise the names of its members to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha by early next week, is also considering names of former Karnataka ministers Shoba Karandlaje and Jagdish Shettigar for the Rajya Sabha.

C.D. Monappa-trained Time Is Precious, ably ridden by B. Mahesh, bagged the F.B. Sharma Memorial Gold Cup, the feature event of the races held here on Wednesday.

Jaya move for her work: SP

Uttar Pradesh SP president Akhilesh Yadav, speaking to this newspaper, on Wednesday said that the decision to renominate Ms Jaya Bachchan was taken following “constructive work done by her for the party and her non-partisan with regard to Amar Singh’s expulsion”.

US announces hike in visa application fee

The US has announced an increase in the fee for all categories of non-immigrant visas with effect from June 4. Applicants who purchased their receipts before June 4 will pay the balance between the old and new fees at the time of the interview.

GMR net profit plunges by 43%

GMR Infrastructure on Tuesday said that its net profit has declined 43.31 per cent to Rs 158.40 crore in the fiscal 2010 from Rs 279.45 crore in the same period a year ago.
Revenue, however, has gone up by 14 per cent at Rs 4,566.5 crore in FY10 from Rs 4,019.2 crore in FY09. The decline in net profit, according to the company, is mainly due to the absence of revenues from the decommissioned 235 MW barge mounted power plant during the year.

Govt plans to set up air safety council

The government is planning to set up a civil aviation safety advisory council in the wake of the devastating Mangalore crash of an Air-India Express aircraft. The proposal was mooted during a high-level meeting at the ministry presided over by civil aviation minister Praful Patel.
