Delhi is set to have a new police commissioner with the Centre preparing to make the announcement early next week after the visit of US President Barack Obama. Director general of Tihar Prisons, B.K. Gupta is emerging as the frontrunner for the post. Official sources said that Mr Y.S. Dadwal, credited for the peaceful conduct of the Commonwealth Games, will be overseeing the security arrangements in place for the high-profile visit of the US President.
HC for check on use of pesticides
Rampant use of banned pesticides in fruits and vegetables, which continues to put at risk the life of the common man, forced the Delhi high court to take suo motu cognisance over the matter after going through a media report.
Inmates for open jail at Tihar
At least 350 inmates of the Tihar Central Jail have written to the Delhi government seeking open jail system, something which has been followed in many states.
Tihar jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta said that the facility has been attempted by many states. It is a huge success in Rajasthan, but it is for the prisoners who are not considered to be part of the high-risk category, he said. He added that at least 350 inmates have requested the government to adopt this system.
Panel blames consultant in report
The fact-finding committee constituted by the Delhi government after the collapse of the foot overbridge at the J.N. Stadium submitted its report on Tuesday and attributed the collapse to faulty design and blamed the consultant.
Man hangs self in police station
A 25-year-old man committed suicide at the Vijay Vihar police station in outer Delhi on Monday evening after he was allegedly assaulted by the cops. The incident took place on Monday at around 10 pm.
